Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au bon dieu? is an intriguing French comedy. This movie was a box office of the year in France with 12 million movie goers watching this in the cinema.
The movie opens with three weddings of Marie and Claude Verneuil’s daughters. Daughter nr 1 marries a succesful Chinese banker. Daughter nr 2 says yes to a Moroccan lawyer. Daughter nr 3 falls for a jobless Jew.
Marie and Claude need to accept their sons in law in order to make their daughters happy. They have hope that daughter nr 4 will marry a Catholic, a French man. But Laure, their youngest daughter is engaged to Charles who is an actor and black. Charles comes from Ivory coast.
The story continues with the preparations of Laure and Charles’ wedding. Claude is clearly against this wedding, so is Charles’ father.
This comedy is very entertaining. Some will see this as a racist movie but I think there are situations in real life which ressemble some scenes.
After the third daughter’s wedding, the family gathers together for dinner. This dinner goes out of hand starting with Claude who says judgmental remarks towards his sons in law. In turn all three sons in law end up fighting each other, defending themselves.
Next scene, thanks to the daughters all three sons in law finally get along well. The family celebrates Christmas at the parents’ mansion in Chinon, Auvergne. Marie, the mother, makes an effort serving three different Turkeys for dinner. One is kosher for the Jew, one is halal for the Moroccan and one is in Peking style for the Chinese.
I can imagine for some people out of France this movie would be shocking but it is as it is. There are many immigrants in different European countries. Friends with different racial backgrounds make jokes about their origin. Racial prejudices are present in this movie. As long as we can laugh about it, I see nothing wrong with it.
The title is translated in English as Bad Weddings. This doesn’t cover the essence of the movie in my opinion. Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au bon dieu? means What have we done to God. This is Claude and Marie’s Verneuil’s question to God as devoted French Catholics. What have they done to God that all their four daughters marry the sons of immigrants? Ok, Laure the youngest is going to marry a Catholic, Charles. But he is not a white French man, he is black.
The ending is predictable. As I wrote above, everybody is happy. In real life it might not end that way but that doesn’t mean we can’t laugh about it. I mean the message of the movie is one needs to accept differences in order to be able to live together.
This movie is very refreshing amidst many things which go wrong in the world right now.
