This amazing animation shows how Amsterdam canals (grachtengordel) and areas around them in the city center were built in 1600 – 1700. The first area shown is where I went to visit last week, Nine streets (negen straatjes). The city was built on swamps. This is the reason why most (now) old buildings are not straight. The city was neatly built and arranged block by block until it had developped as we know now.
