Birkin the person, not the bag

Fashionistas know that the epic Hermès Birkin bag is named after Jane Birkin. It was in 1984 that Birkin sat next to Hermès CEO, Jean-Louis Dumas in a plane. She complained of not being able to find the perfect leather bag, he made one and named it after her. Nowadays Birkin bag is the It bag with a price tag starting from € 7.000,-. It is so exclusive the bag is only sold in Hermès boutique, not online.

Jane Birkin is a British actress and singer. She has been living in France from 1960. Moving to France from England, Birkin was lucky to passed to audition for a movie.

Jane Birkin

She starred in the movie Slogan, paired with Serge Gainsbourg whom she was going to marry a few years later. The picture above was Jane Birkin during her heyday. Like Brigitte Bardot in the 60’es Birkin was beautiful and sexy in an innocent way. Let’s say like the representation of Nabokov’s Lolita.

In 1969 Birkin recorded Je t’aime…moi non-plus (I love you….me neither) with Serge Gainsbourg. This song is rubbish if you ask me🙂 It is actually filled with Birkin’s sighing and Gainsbourg’s singing. Je t’aime …… moi non plus was banned in several European countries. Actually it hit the Dutch chart in 1974, 5 years after its release.

Hear and judge yourself.

With Serge Gainsbourg Birkin got a daughter, Charlotte. Charlotte is born in 1971. A splitting image of her mother she is a real française with an air of je ne sais quoi (literary translation: something special which is difficult to explain). I love her style, a bit bohemian, hippie with the trendy elegant edge which only French women can effortlessly pull off. Ok, her mother is British, but for me Charlotte is 100% French.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

This is one of Charlotte’s song I like: In the end. Not enough of Charlotte, Jane Birkin’s daughter? Watch her in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac later this year. I will.

Back to Jane Birkin, she still sings and acts. This is how she looks like now, the woman whose name has become a status symbol of wealth and style in the pop culture today.

  1. Aku baru sekarang baca sejarah nama tas yg ngeheitzzzz itu, mbak. Err… para seleb yg (ngaku2) fashionista disini, pada tahu nggak ya, sejarah tas yg mereka puja2 setinggi langit itu…? Muihihihi *ngikik usil*😆
Err… bukan aku, tentu saja.

Kalo sekarang, harganya udah diatas sejuta, cuma sayangnya kayaknya mulai kalah marketing sama tas lain, jadi udah mulai dikit produksinya.

Tapi aku ndak gitu suka model tasnya Hermes sih😀

  2. “Birkin was beautiful and sexy in an innocent way. Let’s say like the representation of Nabokov’s Lolita”…. Innocent???

At the time I was a young man who didn’t notice Lolita’s innocence ;(. And, well, even rereading the novel today I don’t think Nabokov’s iconic character is innocent. On top of that: neither was Birkin in my opinion. Actually she in a way still is hot.

By the way: Nymph()maniac has been released in the Netherlands a month ago.

    • Oh Colson, thanks for your remark. Of course Lolita is not innocent. I meant in the post above is that when I read the book I imagined Lolita as an innocent looking girl. What she does in the story is far from innocent😉 Birkin was innocent looking in her younger days and that reminds me of how Lolita looked like in my head. I will rephrase it.

Birkin is ages very well and stays good looking.

Thanks for the info, I need to get to the filmhuis for the movie.

  3. Do you like the Hermès bags Lo?

Sometimes I am amazed by Indonesian who spend million or billion perhaps for a branded bag while they can’t even say the name properly :p and in one case here that I know, living under government’s welfare, but has to have “it” bag for what…prestige?

    • Not really Ria, I love the shawls and boots although I can’t afford them🙂 Ha…ha…true. I can’t stand people who pronounce French & Italian brands with English accent, like Syenel for Chanel (Syanel).

Begitulah Ria, keblinger namanya. Everything is about prestige.

  5. Mama ku korbannya tuh mba😀 Sudah pasti lah ga bisa beli asli, jadi KW super pun jadi lah..huhuhuh..

Sampe sekarang beli tas diatas 500rb aja mikir banget lho.. Apalagi yg udah puluhan juta.. muahaha.. Kalo sanggup pun ga akan beli, mending nyicil rumah..hahah..

Jadi ngerti asal muasal si Hermes Birkin yg fenomenal.. Thanks sharing nya ya mba Yo..

  6. aku taunya ya sekilas hermes ini prduk kuda2 gitulah mba gatau detailnya duhhh katro deh aku secara bukan bag person apalagi fashionista. punya tas aja lungsuran semua eman2 beli tas ampe belasan apalgi puluhan apalgi ratusan juta T_T

    thankyu lho mba infonya🙂

Cuma ya udah menang nama ya, beli brand bukan beli tas kalo harga segitu sih.

      Sama-sama Nisa.
