Joyeux anniversaire Simone

One of my inspirations, Simone de Beauvoir, French philosopher, feminist & existentialist, was born today 106 years ago.

Google honored her by this setting this Google Doodle today.

Inspiring quotes
I read some of her books when I was a student. These are De Beauvoir’s quotes I find inspiring:

One is not born a woman, but becomes one.

Man is defined as a human being and woman as a female – whenever she behaves as a human being she is said to imitate the male.

What is an adult? A child blown up by age.

Change your life today. Don’t gamble on the future, act now, without delay.

From the hour you were born you began to die, but between birth and death, there is life.

I don’t know what Simone would think of women and women’s rights today if she was still around. She would keep her hope when she hears about Malala and the likes. Or she would be terrified to see how women use their sexuality to get what they want. Even worse, some are dressed in sexy clothes, screaming about women’s empowerment.

Anyhow, Joyeux anniversaire, happy birthday Simone!

  1. Wow, ternyata pergerakan perempuan emang udah dari jaman dahulu kala ya, mbak Yo..?
Eh tapiiii.., aku baru sekali ini loh, baca soal simone ini, hihi. Payah deh ah, kudu nambah2 daftar bacaan nih, bukan cuma fiksi doang..πŸ˜†

  2. aku suka banget sama quote yang terakhir Mba “From the hour you were born you began to die, but between birth and death, there is life”πŸ™‚

  3. Iya Mba, pas buka google penasaran sama gambar yang dipajang
baru tahu itu wajahnya Simone, kalo filosofi sama perjuangannya soal perempuan aQ dah pernah denger dari temen kerjaku dulu.

iya ya Mba, perempuan sekarang kebanyakan ga menghargai dirinya sendiri, sorry to say… soale itu yang aku liat di jakarta ini. rok super pendek dan ketat, dada nggelewer kemana-mana , ga sayang apa sama keindahan tubuh sendiri ya T__T

  4. With all due respect ( and I have a lot of respect for her) I doubt whether her own ( and Sartre’s) biographic data confirm “she would be terrified to see how women use their sexuality to get what they want”.

PS: By the way, within limits, using the advantages of one’s gender isn’t bad by definition in my opinion.

    • Thanks for the reminder ColsonπŸ™‚ I recall De Beauvoir and Sartre had an open relationship. I need to rephrase my sentence above then: Some women scream female empowerment while they position themselves as sex object wearing much revealing clothes. This seems like a contradiction to me but to other women this is a sexual liberation. You are right, (dis)advantages of gender is from all ages.

Juga quote trakhirnya. Aku baru ini tau ttg beliau…tq for sharing mba yo. New insight for me

  7. Sama kaya Joyz, quote nya yang “change your life today” itu kena banget.
Btw, saya juga bingung Mbak Jo. Perempuan yg berbaju terbuka itu kadang bicara untuk kebebasan, tapi kok jadi nggak menghargai diri sendiri..

    • Salah kaprah Za. Mereka bilang itu badan mereka, terserah mau dipamerkan karena itu artinya mereka fearless. Ironisnya lelaki tetap melihat perempuan seperti ini sebagai obyek. Aku lagi draf tentang ini, muncul minggu depan posnya.
