From the very first, somewhere in 2004 I started blogging in English while this was not my mother tongue. It is actually my third language after Bahasa Indonesia and Dutch. So why do I mainly blog in English?

- I blog in English because it is convenient for me to share this online journal with my family and friends both in Indonesia and The Netherlands. Otherwise I need to write the same post in Bahasa Indonesia and Dutch as well.
- By keeping this online journal in English I hope I could contribute to share news and stories from and about Indonesia to non-Indonesians. Sharing about Dutch affairs seen from my point of view as an Indonesian living in The Netherlands would be interesting to read for my Dutch family and relatives or just random bloggers.
- I don’t want to limit my online contact with Indonesian speaking bloggers only as I have huge interest in bloggers from other nationalities and their cultures.
- Blogging in English forces me to keep my vocabulary, proficiency and writing because I communicate in Dutch daily. I believe that in order to maintain foreign language skills one has to train them on regular basis. And remember: A language is more than a set of vocabulary and grammar.
From time to time I do write posts in Bahasa Indonesia and I will continue to do so. Especially when the subject is typical Indonesian which requires far more words to explain in English. I gladly welcome comments in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.
This post I wrote as promised in my post about Indonesian children in big cities who prefer to communicate in English. Enough about me now.
