Tonight, an unique event takes place in The Netherlands. This annual event, called Nacht van de Nacht (Night of the Night), is hold by Provinciale Milieufederaties (Environment Federations of Dutch Provinces) and Stichting Natuur en Milieu (Foundation of Nature and Environment). Nacht van de Nacht is an effort to bring back the beauty of the dark during the night in this country.
For those who wonder why is this so important? Please read some information below:
- there are less dark places at night left in the Netherlands (greenhouses lighted all night long, enligthed advertisingpilars and streetlights are almost everywhere)
- humans and animals can not sleep well because of the light in the night
- unnecessary use of electricity (think of the neon lights at night along routes where people barely pass by)
- the beautiful starry nights (as one which was ever painted by Van Gogh) are hardly seen
Participation on this are free & voluntarily. Many Dutch municipalities organise interesting activities related to this theme. Even the big IKEA has promised to turn off its lights on its show rooms.
